Contribution to the study of the genus Fuirena (Cyperaceae) in Argentina

Fuirena (ca. 55 species) is a tropical to warm temperate genus, with centers of diversity in Africa and the Americas. In Argentina it is represented by three species and one form. In this paper we treat the genus Fuirena for Argentina. A new species historically confused with Fuirena incompleta Nees is here described and illustrated, Fuirena truncata Reutemann & M. G. López. Diagnostic characters that allow differentiation of F. truncata from F. incompleta are compared, and information on their geographical distribution is provided. Fuirena incompleta Nees f. glabra Maury is subsumed under the synonymy of F. incompleta, and lectotypes are designated for F. incompleta and F. incompleta f. glabra. An updated identification key to the four species of Fuirena recognized in this study for Argentina is also provided. Finally, the taxonomic value of leaf and stem anatomy for the Argentinian species of Fuirena is discussed.
