Abstract

In Argentina, there are 11 native Jatropha taxa; however, there is controversy among authors regarding the delimitation of some taxa, and certain names could be included in synonymy. There are no phylogenetic studies to date, and many aspects of their morpho-anatomy remain unknown. Therefore, it is essential to elucidate aspects that provide useful information for new taxonomic treatments. Stem and leaves of four native taxa, J. excisa var. excisa, J. macrocarpa, J. hieronymi and J. pedersenii that inhabit two distinct phytogeographic regions were analyzed comparatively, in order to identify vegetative characters with ecological value related to their environment, as well as others with taxonomic importance, which contribute to the infrageneric delimitation of Jatropha and the distinction of taxa. Stems and leaves of individuals from different populations were fixed in FAA, and temporary and permanent slides were made. The leaf presented greater exomorphological and anatomical differences between the taxa in relation to the stem. The analyses carried out indicated that J. excisa var. excisa, J. macrocarpa and J. hieronymi, which grow in the Chaco Phytogeographic Province, exhibit characteristics typical of plants adapted to xeric environments, which were not exhibited by J. pedersenii, which lives in the Paranaense Province. We confirmed the taxonomic importance of the following characters: number of lobes, leaf blade shape and petiole length, number and distribution of vascular bundles in the petiole, leaf blade indumentum, presence and types of glandular emergences, and types of stomata and laticifers. It would be advisable to include representatives of other species to corroborate the robustness of these characters in taxonomic keys.
