Abstract

A review of materials of Epithemia zebra var. elongata Grunow ex Frenguelli was carried out with the aim of establishing the validity of this taxon. Specimens of the Frenguelli collection and others, recently collected in Tierra del Fuego, were studied with light and scanning electron microscopes. The analysis of the variability of morphological and morphometric characters of three populations and the comparison with its allied taxa, Epithemia adnata (Kützing) Brébisson and E. adnata var. minor (Peragallo &
Héribaud) Patrick, showed no differences between them, so E. zebra var. elongata must be considered a synonym of E. adnata.
