Dioscorea monadelpha and D. subhastata, species that belong to a nomenclaturally and taxonomically misinterpreted group, are delimited, described, and illustrated; distribution areas are alsogiven. The names D. similis and D. longirachis are here reduced to synonymy of D. monadelpha. Dioscorea piratinyensis is also considered a new synonym of D. subhastata. Helmia monadelpha, basyonym of D. monadelpha, and D. guaranitica var. balansae are lectotypified.
