The genus Setaria P. Beauv. is represented in South America by 3 subgenera: Ptychophyllum (A.Braun) Hitchc., with 3 species, Setaria with 39 species and 8 varieties, and the new subgenus Cernatum Pensiero with 1 species. From this total of 43 species and 8 varieties, 20 species and 7 varieties are endemic to South America. Setaria rosengurttii Nicora varo uruguayensis Pensiero is proposed as a new variety endemic to Uruguay, while S. cordobensis R.A.W. Herrm. var. limense (Tovar) Pensiero is proposed as a new combination and status. Setaria utowanaea (Scribn. ex Millsp.) Pilg., S. grisebachii E. Foum., and S. liebmanni E. Fourn. are cited for the first time for South America. A key to recognize all species and varieties that grow in South America is given, as well as a description of the species, synonymy, illustrations, geographical distribution and ecological observations.Downloads
